Preventative Program

Here at Dr. Howell's office, we are always striving to find the best way to keep teeth healthy and beautiful. Our Preventative Program has improved the health, appearance, and confidence of each enrolled patient. Most of the patients in this program are 10 years old or older. In this program, each child receives a kit to take home which includes a whitening kit as well as special fluoride and other treatments to strengthen their teeth. We teach the patients and parents how to use this kit and visit with them every couple weeks to mark their progress. At each visit, we work on improving brushing and flossing techniques.

We are very excited with the results of this program! Through it, we have seen many patients' dental health improve drastically. Teeth with beginnings of decay restore themselves through this daily treatment. Smiles are brightened. Each patient has become more confident in their appearance. Our patients are so excited by their beautified teeth that they want to brush and floss everyday. By building this confidence and enthusiasm at a young age, these patients are developing habits that will keep their teeth beautiful and healthy throughout their lives.

February is National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

To celebrate Children’s Dental Health Month, Dr. Bruce Howell is holding an Open House on February 18, 2010 from 4-7 p.m. in his Orem office.

Getting Ready for the Dentist

Parents always wonder what they can do to prepare their child for a trip to the dentist. Mrs. Dean gave us a great idea on what she does so her kids will be excited to come visit the dentist.

Her and her children played "Dentist". They used everyday activities to relate to things we do here in the office.

They washed their feet and scrubed them with a loofa. Mom told them this was like how we brush their teeth. She explained that we want to get all the dirt off and make sure they are nice and clean.

After their feet were all clean (like thier teeth would be) Mom gave each child a bubblegum floss pick. They all stood in front of the mirror together and picked in-between their teeth. Mom showed them a strand of floss and how Dr. Howell's "helpers" would use it to clean between the teeth. Each of the kids got to practice on each other.

They sat down together and Mom talked to them about the special flouride Dr. Howell's helpers would paint on their teeth. She told them that it would make their teeth healthy and strong and look nice. They all painted each others toenails in the same way the flouride would be painted on their teeth. Mom showed them how pretty their toes looked and that they all wanted to have pretty teeth too.

Way to go Mrs. Dean!!

Bernstein Bears go to the Dentist is a great book for the kids to read before they come to visit us.

Most importantly get your kids excited about coming - just like taking them to the zoo or going on an outing to McDonalds. We are so happy to have them come and we want them to be just as happy to see us too!

At our office we love to play games. We find that playing games is not only fun, but helps to build teamwork. For our monthly review meeting we played Jeopardy with the staff.

The categories were; Recalls, Treatment, New Patients, Billing, and "Surprise"

Dr. Howell was the man with all the answers. He was the judge.

Preschool Dentist Day

A day at the Dentist...
We had a preschool come and experience a day at the dentist. We tried out the "moving" chairs, took some pictures of teeth with the x-ray camera, and read books. Dr. Howell taught all of the children about our helper George, the Monkey. He told the children to name their toothbrushes so they can have a friend at brushing time. He told them his toothbrushes name is "Harry the toothbrush" and he told them all about George and his toothbrush, "Sally". The children were a very good audience and had fun during their first visit with us.

We had our annual Valentines Theme day on Wednesday. We had a lot of fun handing out Valentines for the children, giving out some balloons, and dressing up in our favorite Valentines colors.

We had our halloween guessing game out for 1 month. Every day we had lots and lots of guesses but there was only 1 winner!!

We had our first annual PAJAMA DAY on Tuesday, October 7. We all wore pajama pants and slippers. It was so much fun for all the patients and staff to see each other "just out of bed!" We had some cute pj's including Snow White, pumpkins, cars, and super heros.

Here is a few pictures of our "updated" seasonal tree. Emily Van Otten, our Public Relations Coordinator decorates this tree with a variety of cute items for each season. This is for the Fall. Doesn't she do a great job!Our beautiful fish tank has new members as well!! We currently have 3 fish living in our tank. One is Lion Fish, a Yellow Tang, and a One spot fox-faced Rabit Fish. We also have a few star fish, a peppermint shrimp, hermit crabs and a variety of coral surrounding our fish. A clown fish is on his way... we just have to wait for the Lion fish to move out so all the fish can get along happily!We'd like to introduce our newest member of the team... Miss Krista Carroll. Krista just moved here from Wyoming and we are so excited to have her as a part of our team. She is excellent with children and we are sure she will provide a wonderful and positive experience for you and your child!

When Anna, 14, had an accident with a bar on a zip line her front teeth were knocked in and one was broken in half. My regular dentist was out of town, but Dr. Howell was highly recommended and we quickly gave him a call. He had been in surgery all day and was about to go home but he graciously accepted to stay and attend to Anna’s mouth.

Anna’s chin was split open as well as her lower lip, which required many stitches.
Dr. Howell explained that he was not a plastic surgeon, but would do his best if I wanted him to. For over an hour he carefully put her chin and lip back together. He gently molded her front 4 teeth and put on a soft splint. Anna, very traumatized on arrival, became calm with his quiet reassurances as well as the encouragement of his assistant, Jessica.

Now, two weeks later, Anna’s chin looks wonderful; the healing is almost complete, and with time there will hardly be a scar. He reformed her front teeth in time for a family reunion, which was so important to her self-esteem.

With Dr. Howell’s competent and caring help, a terrible and traumatic accident was softened and resolved. We are so grateful for his abilities as well as his gentle concern.
